Community Events and Student U Board Membership
As my project at Hillside, I planned a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration and parent dialogue. The celebration included a student art competition that had dozens of entries. The event brought in a number of our Spanish-speaking families to discuss their engagement with the school, ask questions of administrators, and celebrate their students' artwork submissions. In addition to supporting community events around Hillside, I have been named as a member of the Student U Board of Directors and currently sit on the task force for the WG Pearson Center Student U plans to open in the historic Hayti neighborhood later this year. Artifacts from this work are attached below.

Federal Policy Institute and ESSA State Accountability Model
As part of our first semester DPLA experience, we were able to attend a closed conference at the American Enterprise Institute for education policy leaders. Here, I was able to hear from and question experts like Catherine Brown, David Johns, and Frederick Hess. Our coursework and preparation included a number of readings on federal education policy, Title I, and other important policy considerations. In addition, I spent part of my first fall semester in residency learning about and breaking down the new North Carolina Accountability Model that has been brought on by the new Every Student Succeeds Act. North Carolina will implement the model in the coming school year.
